Primary Biliary Cholangitis: A Review

Abstract: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), which is formally known as primary biliary cirrhosis, is a progressive chronic cholestatic liver disease. Previous epidemiologic studies have demonstrated female predominance. Furthermore, the pathophysiology of PBC is multifactorial, and involves loss of immune tolerance to biliary epithelial cells, with interdependent biliary injury, cholestasis, and progressive liver fibrosis.
