Primary Breast Lymphoma: An Uncommon but Curable Disease

Abstract: Primary malignant breast lymphoma (PBL) is a rare disease with an incidence of 0.04-0.5% of all malignant breast neoplasms. The majority of cases are B-cell lymphomas and the most common histologic type is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLCL). In this study, we report our experience with three cases of PBL. The treatment was the same currently indicated for early stage aggressive NHL, i.e. anthracycline based chemotherapy followed by the involved field radiation therapy. Unfortunately, two patients underwent m… Show more

“…Edema was manifested as fluid between tissue planes. Numerous hypo echoic areas with thick and irregular walls were observed throughout the breast which indicated abscesses; the largest one measured 77×52×47 mm 3 and its volume was 99 mL. The same findings were observed in the other breast.…”

“…The bilateral diffuse type is reported in sporadic cases; it mostly affects pregnant and lactating women with large breasts [2]. The incidence of tumor was 0.04% to 0.5% and it mainly consists of large diffuse cells [3]. Diagnosis is made by biopsy and aspiration.…”

“…For many years radiotherapy was considered the treatment of choice [1, 2, 5, 7, 13]. However, no long follow-up is available in most cases and relapse appears to be frequent.…”

“…Varying frequencies have been reported, but in most series it is less than 0.7% of all breast malignancies and less than 1% of all non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas. Clinical presentation and radiological findings do not differ from breast cancer and the diagnosis is based on pathological material [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8]. Different therapeutic approaches have been considered: surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or well-combined two or three therapeutic modalities.…”

“…Primary lymphoma of the breast (PBL) is a rare disease accounting for 0.5% of breast malignancy and 2.2% of all extranodal lymphomas [1][2][3]. This low incidence may be due to the paucity of lymphoid tissue in the breast [4].…”
