Primary Cutaneous Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma

Abstract: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma represents between 10-30% of primary carcinomas of the submandibulary, parotid and minor salivary glands. Cutaneous involvement is extremely rare and more, as a primary origin of the tumor. A few cases of primary mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the skin have been described. We report an 83-year-old man presenting a primary cutaneous mucoepidermoid carcinoma over his right cheek.

“…For this reason a careful evaluation of the patients to look for occult neoplasms in distant sites needs to be done. It is recommended to perform blood chemistry profile, complete blood count together with diagnostic imaging like total body Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography Scan and p63 immunostaining to differentiate cutaneous metastasis from primary MEC [10,15,16].…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, there are only several papers documenting treatment outcomes of 19 patients having primary cutaneous MEC [2,3] . Here, we described two cases of primary cutaneous MEC and reviewed current evidence in the literature.…”

“…Much more effort is needed to have more advances in the diagnosis of the disease. It is important to rule out cutaneous metastasis from distant sources of MEC, as suggested to have an entire different behaviour and prognosis [2] .…”
