“…The pattern in the percentage contribution of different size fractions to the total chlorophyll biomass observed in the present study was similar to the observations made in the adjacent Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay, southeast coast of India, where the contribution of the smaller fraction of the phytoplankton to the total phytoplankton biomass was found to be predominant in regions were nitrate and silicate concentrations were relatively low (b0.5 μM) Jyothibabu et al, 2013). The significance of smaller fractions of phytoplankton in the Bay of Bengal, though based on limited observations, was reported recently using flow cytometer and HPLC pigment characterization (Mitbavkar and Anil, 2011;Naik et al, 2011), which also strongly support the present observation. The smaller plankton in marine ecosystem received focused attention following the publication of a few seminal papers on the microbial food web (Azam et al, 1983;Pomeroy, 1974).…”

“…According to the standard practice, chemotaxonomically similar marker pigments were grouped together and pigment indices were calculated (Bhaskar et al, 2011;Naik et al, 2011) following the method of Barlow et al (2007).…”

“…The filters were treated with 3 mL 95% acetone for 5 min in an ultrasonic bath filled with ice water and the extracts were stored overnight at À 20 1C for HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) analysis. Chemo-taxonomically similar marker pigments were grouped together based on earlier practice (Naik et al, 2011) and the pigment indices were calculated following the method of Barlow et al (2007). Diagnostic pigment (DP) index has been used to explain the community structure of the study area after confirming the significant relationship between DP and total Chl a by linear regression (r 2 ¼0.79, n¼64, pr0.0001).…”
