Primary ectopic breast carcinoma of the axilla in a male patient

Abstract: Primary ectopic breast carcinoma in male is very rare. We report a case on a 52-year-old gentleman who presented initially with bilateral lesions in his axilla and after delayed diagnosis the right lesion was confirmed as an ectopic breast carcinoma. We reviewed the literature and discussed the significance of the case.

“…The breast tissue arises at the bilateral ectoderm ridge, which is ranges from the axilla to inguinal area, known as the "milk line," and soon disappears after formation except for the small part that remains in the pectoral region. Among the various diseases that can occur in the axilla, ectopic breast tissue occurs when the regression of this primitive mammary tissue fails at a location other than the pectoral breast [2,8].…”

“…1 The majority of EBC specimens (70%) are invasive ductal, and the incidence is higher in Asians. 2,3 The axilla is the most frequently involved location for EBC, and the glandular tissue is within the subcutaneous tissue and deep dermis. 1 Interestingly, according to the review by Visconti et al, 3 PEBC shows a slightly higher male prevalence than other forms of breast cancer.…”

Six of the reported 171 cases were male; thus, the male-to-female ratio was 0.035 for EBC compared with a value of 0.01 for all breast cancers.…”
