Primary small cell carcinoma of the stomach: An experience of two decades (1990–2011) in a Chinese cancer institute

Abstract: Our data indicate that GSCC patients can be treated effectively with combined modality of treatment, despite the aggressive nature of GSCC. Systemic therapy, based on chemotherapy with surgery, is recommended.

“…In this case, the prognosis of collision tumor of choriocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma of the stomach is not determined, because the patient died occurring severe acute lung injury. As previously reported, curative resection and adequate chemotherapy have been found to promote long-term survival in gastric choriocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma [5], [8], [16]. Both gastric choriocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma are highly aggressive diseases and often spread to other organs.…”

“…Small cell carcinomas occur primarily in the lungs and rarely at extra-pulmonary sites, including the stomach [4], [5]. Both gastric choriocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma are aggressive neoplasms and the prognoses of these tumors are poorer than that of the common-type gastric cancer [3], [5]. Several theories have been reported to explain the pathogenesis of gastric choriocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma.…”

“…SCC is a form of high-grade NEC, which usually arises in the lung but may develop in a wide range of extra-pulmonary sites including the stomach. Cases of extra-pulmonary SCC account for only 4% of all SCC diagnoses, with gastric SCC comprising only 8.3–14.5% of extra-pulmonary SCC and 0.1–0.4% of all primary gastric malignancies [ 3 ]. The etiology is uncertain and no specific risk factors have been identified.…”

“…Two of the patients presented with stage IV disease with liver and retroperitoneal metastasis. By 10 December 2011, through a median follow-up of 25.5 months, none of the 15 regularly followed patients had a relapse in brain 41 . The prognosis was reported to be extremely poor because SCC frequently metastasizes to lymph nodes and/or the liver even in an early stage.…”
