PrimaTourism: Preliminary Study on Activity Budget of Dusky leaf monkey Trachypithecus obscurus obscurus in Bukit Soga Perdana, Batu Pahat, Johor

Abstract: Dusky leaf monkey, Trachypithecus obscurus distributed throughout Peninsular Malaysia are currently under threats by agricultural land conversion, habitat fragmentation, pet trade and other anthropogenic development. Bukit Soga Perdana, Batu Pahat, Johor is an island forest surrounded by urban development and the populations are highly fragmented here. PrimaTourism is an alternative way to conserve primate species through the means of wildlife tourism. Thus, the aim for this study is to obtain the daily activi… Show more

“…Vocalization took up 14% of the day in this study compared to only 1.73% and 4% in P. femoralis ( Abdul-Latiff et al 2019 , Najmuddin et al 2020 ), 0.8% in T. obscurus ( Siti-Kauthar et al 2019 ) and 3.89% in T. obscurus ( Md-Zain and Ch'ng 2011 ). “…Comparatively, the Bornean banded langur spend more time feeding (26%) than other closely related species such as P. femoralis , which allocate 21% of their time to feeding ( Abdul-Latiff et al 2019 ), 12.1% for T. cristatus ( Akbar et al 2021 ) and 12.6 % for T. obscurus ( Siti-Kauthar et al 2019 ). The diet of langur in this survey consisted mostly of leaves (81%) such as Resak Laru ( Vatica pauciflora ) and Mengkudu Besar ( Morinda citrifolia ) and 19% of fruits, notably Kerueh ( Lophopetalum pallidum ).…”

“…Typically, researchers use an economic valuation approach to determine the value of forest goods and services in this regard (Hasan Basri et al, 2020). Numerous studies on primatology in Malaysia have been conducted in terms of ecology, behavior, and genetics (Md Zain et al, 2019; Osman et al, 2020; Ruslin et al, 2019), primate ecotourism (Najmuddin et al, 2019; Siti‐Kauthar et al, 2019), and wildlife tourism (Siew et al, 2018; Yee et al, 2018). Meanwhile, studies on the economic value of wildlife conservation in Malaysia have been conducted with a focus on the proboscis monkey (Karim, 2005), elephant (Kaffashi et al, 2015), orangutans (Kamaludin et al, 2021; Mohd Asri et al, 2021), and Malayan tiger (Mzek et al, 2022).…”

“…Many studies on primatology have been conducted in Peninsular Malaysia, including ecology, behavior, and genetics aspects (Abdul-Latiff et al 2019a;Md-Zain et al 2019;Osman et al 2020;Ruslin et al 2019). Few published reports are available related to primate ecotourism in Peninsular Malaysia (Abdul-Latiff et al 2019b,c, Najmuddin et al 2019, Siti-Kauthar et al 2019. However, there is a lack of ecotourism data on the uniqueness of this location, which should be emphasized as a good ecotourism site involving primate conservation in Malaysia.…”
