“…But what can be done with frozen ovarian tissue of the leukemia survivor if there happen to have been leukemic cells in that tissue? Culturing that tissue to obtain mature follicles for IVF in these patients is currently the subject of intense research efforts (61)(62)(63). Culturing of primordial follicles may still be a distant goal (64)(65)(66)(67)(68), but progress is now being made with threedimensional culturing of secondary follicles, because one mechanism controlling follicle maturation in the ovarian cortex may be physical pressure and tissue rigidity (69)(70)(71)(72).…”

“…First, it may be due to the oocyte susceptibility to the environment during the first meiosis (20). According to a multicenter trial that investigated the safety of follicular fluid meiosis-activating sterol for IVM of human oocytes, both prolonging the culture time from 30 to 36 hours and the 20-mM dose of follicular fluid meiosis-activating sterol increased the aneuploidy rate (21). Second, FSH may increase aneuploidy owing to its effects on microtubule (3,22).…”

“…Presence of cumulus providing metabolites from glycolysis and follicular fluid meiosis activating sterol (FF-MAS), a sterol intermediate in the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway produced within the follicle in vivo reduced or prevented the incidence of precocious chromatid segregation prior to anaphase II in this model (Cukurcam et al, 2007). Although human oocytes matured with FF-MAS did not have reduced aneuploidy rates compared to in vivo ovulated ones, FF-MAS might have protected oocytes from errors in chromosome segregation induced by the in vitro maturation conditions (Smitz et al, 2007). From these observations it appears that multiple factors may influence fidelity of chromosome segregation in young or aged oocytes.…”
