Prion protein is associated with a worse prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: Background Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) etiopathogenesis remains unclear, and the biological changes with the activation of heat shock proteins (HSPs) and prion protein (PRNP) promoted by hypoxia in HNSC are undetermined. This study investigates hypoxia's effect in lymph node metastasis by PRNP expression changes and its main partners. Methods The study combined a theoretical/cell culture study with a case‐control study. First, bioinformatics and cell culture were performed. A case‐control stud… Show more

“… Stewart et al (2019) , shown that the expression level of TP63, PSAT1, and TFRC may correlated with the function of oxidation-reduction and glutathione in squamous cell lung cancer. Santos et al (2021) , found that the expression level of PRNP may significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis progression and worse prognosis for patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. López-Cortés et al (2020) , demonstrated that the protein of PRNP, S100A9, DDA1, TXN, RPS27, S100A14, S100A7, MAPK1, AGR3 and NDUFA13 were considered as the best ranked metastasis driver proteins.…”

“…IHC staining for PrP in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients showed that patients with high PrP expression had a poorer prognosis compared to PrP-negative patients (log-rank test, p < 0.0001) [49]. In head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, increased PrP expression was detected in lymph node metastasis compared to the primary lesion [50]. In lung cancer, PrP expression was mostly negative for in situ tumors, whereas PrP was expressed by invasive adenocarcinomas [51].…”

“…Overexpression of Syntenin‐1 in HNC was found to be significantly correlated with LNM and disease recurrence 9 . PRNP promotes the progression of LNM of HNC through up‐regulation of HSPA4, HSP90AA1, and HIF1A 10 . Nevertheless, the evidence regarding this issue is limited.…”
