Priorities and Challenges in Methodology for Human Health Risk Assessment from Combined Exposure to Multiple Chemicals

Abstract: This paper reviews key elements in the assessment of human health effects from combined exposure to multiple chemicals taking into consideration current knowledge and challenges to identify areas where scientific advancement is mostly needed and proposes a decision-making scheme on the basis of existing methods and tools. The assumption of dose addition and estimation of the hazard index (HI) is considered as a starting point in component-based risk assessments. When, based on the generic HI approach, an unacc… Show more

“…In the same time, researchers tried to develop Pd-free catalysts for coupling reactions, but later found that the reagents were contaminated by trace palladium . In addition, palladium species bind to various biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids, leading to a range of physiological dysfunctions and negatively affecting human health. , Thus, the development of simple and reliable sensors to monitor palladium with extremely high sensitivity and selectivity is required.…”

“…31 1. Uptake of computational methods in mycotoxins risk assessment New Approach Methods (NAMs) in risk assessment (Magurany et al, 2023;Nikolopoulou et al, 2023) encompass a range of novel and alternative approaches utilised for evaluating the safety and potential risks posed by chemicals, drugs, or other substances. These methods, often based on in vitro and in silico techniques, aim to provide robust and predictive data, while minimising or eliminating the reliance on animal testing.…”
