Prismatic imaging polarimeter calibration for the infrared spectral region

Abstract: The calibration of a complete Stokes birefringent prismatic imaging polarimeter (BPIP) in the MWIR is demonstrated. The BPIP technique, originally developed by K. Oka, is implemented with a set of four Yttrium Vanadate (YVO(4)) crystal prisms. A mathematical model for the polarimeter is presented in which diattenuation due to Fresnel effects and dichroism in the crystal are included. An improved polarimetric calibration technique is introduced to remove the diattenuation effects, along with the relative radiom… Show more

“…Such a phase extraction can be achieved within a single snapshot using Fourier transform techniques. [13][14][15][16][17][18] Expressing Eqs. (1) and (2) in terms of the general spatial coordinates (x, y) yields I R ¼ aðx; yÞ þ bðx; yÞ cosð2πx∕p 0 Þ…”

“…The amount of emission is based on each element's temperature. In Michael Kudenov's paper 12 , "Prismatic imaging polarimeter calibration for the infrared spectral region," he treats the calibration procedure for the system given in the following figure, This type of polarimeter is very similar to our system, because it too uses a spatially modulated image to back out the Stokes parameters. The basic system concept as far as the imaging polarimetry is the same, so calibration procedures for each will parallel each other.…”
