Privacy-Preserving Multi-Operator Contact Tracing for Early Detection of Covid19 Contagions

Abstract: The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) is imposing a severe worldwide lock-down. Contact tracing based on smartphones' applications (apps) has emerged as a possible solution to trace contagions and enforce a more sustainable selective quarantine. However, a massive adoption of these apps is required to reach the critical mass needed for effective contact tracing. As an alternative, geo-location technologies in next generation networks (e.g., 5G) can enable Mobile Operators (MOs) to perform passive… Show more

“…The new generation of mobile networks, such as 5G, allows mobile operators to track users' movements and find their contacts. In this regard, contact tracing can be implemented using mobile network data [17]. The accuracy of this technology is about 140 m, making it a good solution for large-scale contact tracing.…”

“…Most of the COVID-19 contact tracing apps released so far are based on location/ proximity-based contact tracing, location-based hotspot reporting, and self-reported symptom tracking [17] , [19] , [24] – [36] . On the other hand, if the location data can be obtained from cellular mobile phone networks, then the issues related to the BLE-based tracing technique can be eliminated as well as the technological requirements (e.g.…”
