Privacy, Security and Usability for IoT-enabled Weight Loss Apps

Mobile application (app) use is increasingly becoming an essential part of our daily lives. Due to their significant usefulness, people rely on them to perform multiple tasks seamlessly in almost all aspects of everyday life. Similarly, there has been immense progress in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, especially deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics. These technologies are now actively being implemented in smartphone apps and healthcare, providing multiple healthcare services. However, several factors affect the usefulness of mobile healthcare apps, and usability is an important one. There are various healthcare apps developed for each specific task, and the success of these apps depends on their performance. This study presents a systematic review of the existing apps and discusses their usability attributes. It highlights the usability models, outlines, and guidelines proposed in previous research for designing apps with improved usability characteristics. Thirty-nine research articles were reviewed and examined to identify the usability attributes, framework, and app design conducted. The results showed that satisfaction, efficiency, and learnability are the most important usability attributes to consider when designing eHealth mobile apps. Surprisingly, other significant attributes for healthcare apps, such as privacy and security, were not among the most indicated attributes in the studies.

Determining the appropriate approaches and procedures to gain sufficient results is a vital issue that is faced by the majority of researchers. Each type of research can have several methodologies that can be applied. Yet, one approach might lead to concluding more effective outcomes. Thus, designing the research and applying appropriate methods and techniques are the key aim of this experiment. Combining the research onion framework with an advanced Internet of Things- (IoT-) enabled mobile app solution within the real world is the foundation of this research. The framework has six main layers, starting with philosophy and ending with techniques and procedures. This research begins by providing a brief introduction in regard to the selected framework. Then, it provides a comprehensive explanation regarding each of the framework layers and justifying the chosen element within each layer combining with the advanced IoT-enabled mobile app for this research study. Later, it highlights the challenges that can be faced while using such a framework.

Currently, overweight and obesity are two problems for global health that affect people’s quality of life. The Internet of Things (IoT) has raised the possibility of digital interaction taken to another level. This paper proposes design requirements to develop a mobile application that contributes to the control of overweight or obesity under the IoT approach, focusing on some approaches that currently exist in home-oriented health with the help of existing mobile applications. The idea of this concept is the presence of the environment of various interconnected things or objects with sensors, networking, and processing technologies integrating and working together to provide an environment in which smart services are taken to the end users. The IoT allows monitoring people in real time and analyzing information provided by mobile applications and smart devices (wearables) they have, through techniques of artificial intelligence that allow the identification of variables criticism and the generation of medical recommendations. The medical assistance model will change from the existing hospital-centric model that we commonly know to a totally home-centred health one, in which there will be less work intensity and operational cost. The home health service allows the use of IoT technology, very often called Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT).
