Proactive Modulation in the Spatiotemporal Structure of Muscle Synergies Minimizes Reactive Responses in Perturbed Landings

Abstract: Stability training in the presence of perturbations is an effective means of increasing muscle strength, improving reactive balance performance, and reducing fall risk. We investigated the effects of perturbations induced by an unstable surface during single-leg landings on the mechanical loading and modular organization of the leg muscles. We hypothesized a modulation of neuromotor control when landing on the unstable surface, resulting in an increase of leg muscle loading. Fourteen healthy adults performed 5… Show more

“…Fundamental synergies, defined as activation patterns with a single main activation peak ( Santuz et al, 2018a ), were classified as described in detail by Munoz-Martel et al (2021) . In short, muscle synergies were classified using a method based on k -means clustering.…”

“…For each point of the running cycle (from 1 to 200), we also calculated the frequency at which motor primitives exceeded half of their maximum over the 60 running cycles, and the frequency at which they overlapped. Overlap occurred when at least two primitives exceeded half of their maximum at the same time 30,62 .…”

“…Therefore, in future studies, the coordination of different muscles should be analyzed in addition to the analysis of the activity of individual muscles. Coordination models, such as muscle synergies, are particularly suitable for this purpose(60, 61).…”
