Probabilistic analysis of climate change impact on chloride-induced deterioration of reinforced concrete considering Nordic climate

Abstract: The impact of climate change on the deterioration of reinforced concrete elements have been frequently highlighted as worthy of investigation. This article addresses this important issue by presenting a time-variant reliability analysis to assess the effect of climate change on four limit states; the probabilities of corrosion initiation, crack initiation, severe cracking, and failure of a simply supported beam built in 2020 and exposed to chloride-induced corrosion. The historical and future climate condition… Show more

“…Thus, weather parameters, their extremes from climate change, trigger the highly non-linear ASR expansion in case. These findings align with previous studies demonstrating the effects of clim change on the chemo-physical behavior of concrete infrastructures [25][26][27][28].…”

“…Thus, climate extremes pose potential threats and risks [24]. This intrinsic randomness from climate-change-induced extreme events can adversely affect cement-based materials, especially, impacting the chemo-physical behavior of concrete infrastructures [25][26][27][28]. Particularly, the frequent changes in weather conditions can create anomalies in the chemical kinetics of ASR gel production and subsequent expansion.…”

“…The impact of climate change has been studied recently by many researchers worldwide [2,3]. An increasing temperature due to climate change accelerates material degradation and exacerbates the bridge's structural integrity and serviceability [4,5]. The Canadian Infrastructure report card released in 2019 stated that functional and structural deficiencies are more noticeable for approximately 40% of Canadian bridges due to increasing climate change loads and not considering the temperature increase properly during the design phase [6,7].…”

“…In fact, among the different types of degradation of RC constructions, corrosion of the steel rebar is the most usual one, considering that all the main structural elements of RC bridges are subjected to the same environmental conditions at the construction site. Moreover, the intensification of environmental pollution and the impacts of climate change have influenced the continuous evolution of corrosion phenomena, as demonstrated by several research works developed in recent years [9][10][11][12][13].…”
