Probability weighted indices for improved ecosystem report card scoring

Abstract: This paper outlines a new method for computing an ecosystem index using probability weighted moments (PWMs) in place of conventional moments. Conventional methods of index construction are based on a scaled measure of the discrepancy between the sample mean and a guideline or reference value and as such tend to reflect only gross movements in distributional location. PWMs on the other hand allow for a more targeted assessment through the incorporation of a weighting function specified by the analyst. We refer … Show more

“…WQI is an indicator through which water quality is assessed quantitatively. It generates a single score by combining sub-index value of each concern pollutant (Fox, 2014). This single score enables general public as well as policymakers, and watershed managers to understand the condition of the environment without having a thorough knowledge about it.…”

“…Water quality index (WQI) proved an easy method for the assessment of water quality in a numerical way. It converts the pollutants concentration to various sub-indexes and ultimately change these values into one numerical value, depending on their quality [42].…”

“…They are then recorded and visually represented in a report card to communicate this information to a wide and diverse audience . Some popular statistical approaches for calculating environmental report card indices are principal component analysis, cluster analysis, analysis of variance and factor analysis . A variety of software is used to create these report cards including statistical packages, database packages, mapping and modelling software, custom built software and specialist desktop publishing software .…”
