“…Many probiotics are LAB, and some of which can often be resistant to antibiotics, 76 and may represent a risk for ARG transmission if not carefully monitored. There are a variety of studies that focus on determining the safety of these widely used LAB probiotics, specifically Lactobacillus , 77–79 Bacillus , 64 and nonpathogenic Enterococcus , 80 with the purpose of identifying putative ARG or virulence-associated genes in commercial strains. Conjugative ARGs have indeed been identified in food-associated LAB.…”

“…Additionally, the current study indicates a higher abundance of Enterococcus species in rats fed CEL. Enterococcus faecalis improves host health [25,26] and is clinically relevant for the treatment of chronic recurrent bronchitis [27]. Some Enterococcus species are employed as probiotics and in the production of feed additives to prevent diarrhea in animals [24].…”

“…Generally, E. faecium strains that possess hemolysin/cytolysin, virulence and/or vancomycin-resistance genes do not seem widespread in raw milk and traditional cheeses in Greece and, in recent years, few unsafe E. faecium strains were retrieved from various cheeses of neighboring countries ( Hammad et al., 2015 ; Özkan et al., 2021a ). The incidence of virulence factors in food isolates of E. faecium is strain-specific, like E. faecium ST7319ea ( Fugaban et al., 2021 ). In general, few strains within an isolated group, most of which belonged to E. faecalis , harbored the ace and gelE genes, as the E. faecalis KFM47, KFM48 and KFM50 strains ( Table 6 ), or the agg, IS16, espA and hyl- like genes ( Morandi et al., 2015 ; Hammad et al., 2015 ; Gaglio et al., 2016 ; Ruiz et al., 2016 ; Domingos-Lopez et al., 2017 ).…”
