Problems of selecting filter partition in passenger car engine intake air filters

Abstract: The aim of this study was to verify the criteria for selecting pleated filter partitions used in passenger car engine filters. The paper presents the problem of optimizing pleated air filters in the dir ection of minimizing pressure drop, which is the source of engine energy losses. Two criteria for selection of a paper filter partition for specific operating conditions of the filter and the engine are presented: criterion of permissible separation speed and criterion of permissible pressure drop. The actual f… Show more

“…There is mainly a lack of information regarding changes in engine emissions. The authors studied the description of studies of the effect of air filter pressure drop on the operation of naturally aspirated internal combustion engines: carburetor and diesel engines, but equipped with a classic injection system with an in-line piston (sectional) injection pump [54][55][56][57][58][59]. Today, engines of this type are not used in motor vehicles.…”

“…The results of a study of the effect of air filter pressure drop p f on the external characteristics of N e effective power and specific fuel consumption ge of a special vehicle Diesel engine are presented in [55]. An increase in air filter pressure drop in the range p f = 6-30.7 kPa causes a significant decrease in engine power and an increase in specific fuel consumption.…”

“…Engines of trucks, special vehicles (tanks, armored personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles) and working machines operating in conditions of high dust concentrations in the air are usually equipped with two-stage filters. The first stage of air filtration is a multicyclone and the second one is a cylindrical filtering insert which, due to space limitations and efforts to increase the surface area of the filtering material, is made of pleated filter paper [16,17].…”
