Procedural Modeling of Interconnected Structures

Abstract: The complexity and detail of geometric scenes that are used in today's computer animated films and interactive games have reached a level where the manual creation by traditional 3D modeling tools has become infeasible. This is why procedural modeling concepts have been developed which generate highly complex 3D models by automatically executing a set of formal construction rules. Well-known examples are variants of L-systems which describe the bottom-up growth process of plants and shape grammars which define… Show more

“…An overview on generative modeling techniques can be found in the surveys by WATSON and WONKA [3] as well as by VANEGAS et al [4]. All models with well-organized structures [5] and repetitive forms [6] benefit from procedural model descriptions. Its strength lies in a compact description, which does not depend on the counter of primitives but on the model's complexity itself.…”

“…[30][31][32][33] Urban modelling is a prominent reason for the popularity of procedural modelling, as cities are not only big, but also incredibly detailed. 34 With manual modelling, it would be too tedious and time-consuming to generate realistic 3D models.…”

“…• rule-based: using substitutions and substitution rules to generate complex structures out of simple starting structures [29][30][31][32]; • imperative and scripting-based: using a scripting engine and techniques from predominant programming languages [20,33,34] or; • GUI and dataflow-based: using new graphical user interfaces (GUI) and intelligent GUIs to detect structures in modeling tasks, which can be mapped onto formal descriptions [35,36].…”
