Process Development for Benzyl Alcohol Production by Whole-Cell Biocatalysis in Stirred and Packed Bed Reactors

Abstract: The ocean is an excellent source for new biocatalysts due to the tremendous genetic diversity of marine microorganisms, and it may contribute to the development of sustainable industrial processes. A marine bacterium was isolated and selected for the conversion of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol, which is an important chemical employed as a precursor for producing esters for cosmetics and other industries. Enzymatic production routes are of interest for sustainable processes. To overcome benzaldehyde low water … Show more

“…In the present study, a rock pond was used as sampling site because we have been able to find efficient biocatalysts in this type of marine environment ( Rodrigues et al, 2017 ; Rodrigues and de Carvalho, 2022 ), which is characterized by high salt concentration and UV-exposure. The aim of the study was 1) to compare the number of cells that could be grown under laboratorial conditions with the number of cells observed by fluorescence microscopy, and 2) to compare the isolates obtained by cultivation methods with those identified by metataxonomy.…”

“…This compound is utilized in cosmetics as a fragrance, in human medicine as an antimicrobial preservative and local anesthetic, as a solvent for paints, glues, and adhesives, and as a food additive . Benzaldehyde hydrogenation and benzyl chloride hydrolysis are the main processes to produce benzyl alcohol for industrial use, which involve the use of nonrenewable substrates, high temperatures, and byproducts that have a negative impact on the environment . As summarized in Figure , the solid phase consists of a mixture of low-molecular-weight oligomers/polymers with the structure −CH 2 –CH 2 – mixed with boron compounds.…”
