In this work, we explored by means of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy the accessibility of a series of spin probes, covering a scale of molecular weights in the range of 200–60,000 Da, in a variety of hydrogels: covalent network, ionotropic, interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) and semi-IPN. The covalent gel network consists of polyethylene or polypropylene chains linked via isocyanate groups with cyclodextrin, and the ionotropic gel is generated by alginate in the presence of Ca2+ ions, whereas semi-IPN and IPN gel networks are generated in a solution of alginate and chitosan by adding crosslinking agents, Ca2+ for alginate and glutaraldehyde for chitosan. It was observed that the size of the diffusing species determines the ability of the gel to uptake them. Low molecular weight compounds can diffuse into the gel, but when the size of the probes increases, the gel cannot uptake them. Spin-labelled Pluronic F127 cannot be encapsulated by any covalent gel, whereas spin-labelled albumin can diffuse in alginate gels and in most of the IPN networks. The EPR spectra also evidenced the specific interactions of spin probes inside hydrogels. The results suggest that EPR spectroscopy can be an alternate method to evaluate the mesh size of gel systems and to provide information on local interactions inside gels.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) classified the Sars-Cov-2, also identified as COVID-19, as a pandemic on the 12 th of March 2020 (Qiu et al., 2020), with South Africa recording its first case on the 5 th of March 2020. The rapidly spreading virus led the South African government to implement one of the strictest, nationwide lockdowns globally, resulting in the closing down of all institutions of higher learning effective March 18 th 2020. Thus, this qualitative study primarily aimed to explore whether post-graduate psychology students were in a state of a depleted or cohesive self, post the psychological isolation of COVID-19 risk-adjusted level 5 lockdown. Semi-structured interviews from a qualitative interpretive approach comprising N = 6 psychology post-graduate students, facilitated a rich understanding of their intra-psychic experiences of the self. Thematic analysis of data gathered from the interviews illuminated how students were forced into the self by the emotional isolation of hard lockdown, with the emergence of core psychic conflict often defended against, through external self-object experiences. The findings also suggest that lockdown stripped off this sample of psychology post-graduate students' defensive escape from the inner self through external self-object distractions. The external self was stripped to the core of the internal self by the isolation of hard lockdown, thereby uncovering the psychic function of roles and defenses amalgamated throughout modern cultural consciousness that dictate self-functioning. The study suggests modelling reflexivity skills in the integration of internal and external self-experience dynamics as part of a training model for continued personal and professional development for psychology students.

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are unique catalysts due to their increased coordination unsaturation via nanoparticulation. Effective functioning requires an appropriate support to maintain particle dispersion without compromising nanoscale properties. Cross‐linked hydrophilic polymer‐derived hydrogels are ideal supports, particularly for biological and biomedical reactions, due to their aqueous affinity and biocompatibility. However, applications in confined spaces, such as in vivo environments, necessitate hydrogel micronization. This study introduces microsized DNA hydrogels as support for Au catalysts. DNA motif‐composed hydrogel particles exhibit high crosslinking density and produce small Au NPs owing to short DNA strands. This system significantly enhances catalytic efficiency compared to similar‐sized Au NP gel‐supported catalysts and requires minimal gold catalyst. Modulating DNA hydrogel crosslinking density allows easy control of Au NP size and catalytic activity, further improved by increased hydrogel surface area through microparticulation. These findings demonstrate DNA nanotechnology's versatility in tailoring DNA hydrogel properties and Au NP catalytic behavior. Computer‐aided design enables precise particle property and motif arrangement manipulation, offering promising customizable catalytic systems.
