Process Safety in the Pharmaceutical Industry: A Selection of Illustrative Case Studies

Abstract: Awareness of best safety practices in the industrial sector will allow students in chemistry and chemical engineering programs to apply these approaches to their own safety assessments. Process safety is a critical function within the pharmaceutical industry to ensure safety when performing reactions. An introduction to process safety and a series of case studies illustrating how safety is routinely considered within the pharmaceutical industry is presented. The concepts presented herein are applicable to mult… Show more

“…It seemed plausible that the main salt decomposition products would be the parent functionalised amino arene and its respective methyl halide, arising from a retro-Menshutkin reaction. 54 This hypothesis was consistent with the observation that more electron-poor salts degraded at lower temperatures than comparitively electron rich salts. Complementary thermal volumetric analysis (TVA) 55 coupled with a sub-ambient distillation apparatus (TVA-SAD) was used to monitor the decomposition of anilinium iodide salts 1a (unsubstituted iodide), 7a (4-Br) and 12a (4-Me).…”

“…From a deeper Chemistry perspective, recent high-profile accidentson both research and manufacturing scaleshave provided strong drivers for culture change and training improvements. While our focus here is on process-scale chemical manufacturing, the similarly severe safety challenges exist on the laboratory scale; such dangers have been extensively reviewed recently . Through consideration of the emerging digitalization trends and perennial safety challenges in the chemical sector, we envisaged using interactive and immersive virtual reality (VR) as an opportune technology for developing safety training and accident readiness for those working in dangerous chemical environments.…”

“…A recent publication in the Journal of Chemical Education by Dunn et al uses a case study approach to chemical safety lessons learned at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). At GSK, process safety is essential to their business and vital in preventing mishaps.…”
