Processes controlling the seasonal variations in 210Pb and 7Be at the Mt. Cimone WMO-GAW global station, Italy: a model analysis

Abstract: Abstract. We apply the Global Modeling Initiative (GMI) chemistry and transport model driven by NASA's MERRA assimilated meteorological data to simulate the seasonal variations in two radionuclide aerosol tracers (terrigenous 210Pb and cosmogenic 7Be) at the WMO-GAW station of Mt. Cimone (44°12′ N, 10°42′ E; 2165 m a.s.l.; Italy), which is representative of free-tropospheric conditions most of the year, during 2005 with an aim to understand the roles of transport and precipitation scavenging processes in contr… Show more

“…The reason for that are higher temperatures and more dry soils enhancing 222 Rn emanation during this time of the year. Similar seasonal pattern with maximums during the warm season is reported for the Mediterranean coasts in [4] in Spain and at the GAW mountain station at Mt.Cimone in Italy [14]. The monthly variation of 210 Pb in Serbia, reported in [15] for the period 2011-2012, show spring minimum, maximum in November followed by the low values for December and January.…”

“…We cannot measure this directly based on isotopes. What we see and describe is the systematic changes and trends of beryllium-7 concentrations during the last 1-2 decades, presumably caused by gradual changes in circulation patterns 19,29 .…”

“…However, potential errors in the individual trajectories are averaged out when considering a large number of back trajectories over a long‐time period. In addition, our results are further limited from the coarse resolution of the meteorological database used in the back trajectory calculation over a region having a complex topography, similar to the previous work of [ Brattich et al , ] at the same sampling site. In fact, Mt.…”
