Processing and Compatibility of Corydalis yanhusuo: Phytochemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics, and Safety

Abstract: Processed and polyherbal formulations (compatibility) are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, processing and compatibility may alter the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines, and therefore, evaluating the herbal medicines changes after processing and compatibility is important for their safety. Since Corydalis yanhusuo (Y.H.Chou & Chun C.Hsu) W.T.Wang ex Z.Y.Su & C.Y.Wu (Family: Papaveraceae and Genera: Corydalis), a traditional medicinal plant in China, Japan, Korea, and oth… Show more

“…Studies have shown that the total alkaloids of Corydalis yanhusuo can improve the learning and memory ability of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion rats by alleviating neuron injury and increasing the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor [ 80 ]. However, it was reported that the total alkaloids of Corydalis yanhusuo (473.36 mg/kg) could cause liver injury, muscle tremor and renal hemorrhage in mice [ 81 ].…”

“…Chinese herbal medicines are processed following a unique pharmacological technology wherein crude drugs are treated in accordance with traditional Chinese medical theory by considering their individual nature and the requirements of drug dispensing, pharmaceutical preparation, and clinical use [ 1 ]. As a distinguishing characteristic of ancient pharmaceutical technology, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) processing involves various techniques, including cleaning, cutting, roasting, steaming, and boiling, which significantly reduce toxicity or side effects, relieve drug irritation, enhance the therapeutic effects, and increase the clinical applicability of the extracts [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Among these techniques, stir-baking with excipients and frying with liquid excipients are regarded as the most effective and common processing methods [ 5 ].…”

“…has about 38 genera and 700 species worldwide, mainly in the north temperate zone, especially in the Mediterranean region, West Asia, Central Asia to East Asia and southwestern North America (Zhang et al, 2020). Some of these species are used as medicines, especially Corydalis yanhusuo W. T. Wang in the genus Corydalis (Liu et al, 2021;Wu et al, 2021). However, a variety of plants in this family have obvious toxicity, such as Papaver somniferum L., Macleaya cordata (Willd.)…”
