Processus d’appropriation et de mémorisation de raccourcis gestuels sur trackpad : Etude longitudinale des stratégies et usages des utilisateurs et impact d’une aide visuo-sémantique

Abstract

Numerous gestural interaction techniques have been proposed to offer shortcuts to users. Evaluating their real effectiveness in terms of memorization is a difficult question, as most studies are carried out in the laboratory for a limited period of time, and therefore in conditions quite far removed from real use. In this article, we detail a longitudinal study on the spontaneous appropriation of a trackpad shortcut technique, and the effect of a visuo-semantic aid on memorization strategies, recall performance and the use of shortcuts. Six participants (including three with the visuo-semantic aid) were followed for six weeks. The results suggest that the presence of a visuo-semantic aid modifies memorization strategies, and allows users to memorize a greater number of shortcuts. The study also underlines the importance of the software configuration activity as a core part of its appropriation, and suggests that shortcuts might be less useful for their speed of activation than for their ease of use.
