Production, Purification, and Biochemical Characterization of Thermostable Metallo-Protease from Novel Bacillus alkalitelluris TWI3 Isolated from Tannery Waste

Abstract: Protease enzymes in tannery industries have enormous applications. Seeking a potential candidate for efficient protease production has emerged in recent years. In our study, we sought to isolate proteolytic bacteria from tannery waste dumping site in Tamilnadu, India. Novel proteolytic Bacillus alkalitelluris TWI3 was isolated and tested for protease production. Maximum protease production was achieved using lactose and skim milk as a carbon and nitrogen source, respectively, and optimum growth temperature was… Show more

“…The genus Bacillus , belonging to Firmicutes , was the dominant bacterium in both composts with a relative abundance of 16% ( Figure 3 ). Bacillus is well known for the production of thermostable proteases ( Jellouli et al, 2011 ; Anandharaj et al, 2016 ), and strains belonging to this genus have been isolated from manure compost previously ( Charbonneau et al, 2012 ). Bacillus might therefore play an important role in the degradation of nitrogen sources such as chicken manure.…”

“…Keratinolytic enzymes can even contribute to improving drug delivery through the skin (epidermis) ( Gupta et al, 2013a ). Indeed, keratinolytic enzymes have been added as supplements to cosmetics for use in skin whitening and in exfoliation and for assisting drug permeation ( Anandharaj et al, 2016 ; Gupta et al, 2013a ). Keratinolytic enzymes formulated in dehairing cream have also been reported to be particularly effective in removing hair compared to conventional marketed formulations ( Sanghvi et al, 2016 ).…”
