Productivity, embryo and eggshell characteristics, and contaminants in bald eagles from the Great Lakes, USA, 1986 to 2000

Abstract: Chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations in eggs of fish-eating birds from contaminated environments such as the Great Lakes of North America tend to be highly intercorrelated, making it difficult to elucidate mechanisms causing reproductive impairment, and to ascribe cause to specific chemicals. An information- theoretic approach was used on data from 197 salvaged bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) eggs (159 clutches) that failed to hatch in Michigan and Ohio, USA (1986-2000). Contaminant levels declined ove… Show more

“…The values may be overestimated due to cumulative effects of ∑PCB, DDE other chemicals, and other stressors. However, the threshold values for ∑PCB and DDE were close to those estimated for bald eagles (Wiemeyer et al 1993; Elliott and Harris 2001; Best et al 2010). In addition, the first signs of a reduction in reproduction were revealed at a ∑PCB concentration of 1 × 10 4  μg·kg −1 wet weight in eggs (Fig.…”

“…In reality, the fledging success often increases after first breeding and declines at the end of life (Best et al 2010). Large variations were found in survival and reproduction rates.…”

“…In the Northeastern Pacific, transient and resident killer whales (Orcinus orca) continue to be the most PCB-contaminated organisms of the world, which raises serious concerns about their long-term survival (Alava et al, 2012;Best et al, 2010;Buckman et al, 2011;Hickie, Ross, Macdonald & Ford, 2007;Lundin et al, 2016;Ross et al, 2000). While PCBs represent only one chemical class found in killer whales, they are considered the preeminent contaminant threat to high trophic level species in the Northern Hemisphere (Elliott, Butler, Norstrom & Whitehead, 1989;Ross et al, 2000;Ylitalo et al, 2001).…”

“…With legislated restrictions on usage of DDT in the 1970s, environmental concentrations decreased substantially, leading to partial recovery of populations (Grier , Best et al. , Dykstra et al. ).…”
