Profile of Mood States and Parental Attitudes in Motherhood: Comparing Women with Planned and Unplanned Pregnancies

Abstract: In primiparas of middle socioeconomic levels, unplanned pregnancy is a risk factor for moderate mood disturbances rather than for an inadequate parental educational role. The study findings demonstrate the need to prevent unplanned pregnancies, and to offer immediate health assistance when particular conditions arise.

“…These findings are important, because it has heretofore not been known whether or how women’s mental health or experiences in parenting contribute to their subsequent pregnancy evaluations. Previous studies that have found an association between unintended pregnancy and postpartum maternal depression might be flawed due to an unaccounted influence of prenatal depression coloring perceptions of pregnancy intention (e.g., Grussu, Quatraro, & Nasta, 2005). Indeed, this study shows that adolescents’ mental health and parenting experiences appear to play an important role in interpreting their actions and motivations that led to the pregnancy and in their feelings of regret and remorse about having a child as a teenager.…”

“…Other studies have shown the importance of having planned a pregnancy and the effects that can have on a mother pre-and postpregnancy (Deave, 2005;Grussu, Quatraro, & Nasta, 2005;Schmied & Lupton, 2001). Figueiredo et al (2008) suggested that a smooth transition may be related to positive relationships with women's partners.…”

“…However, in this study we choose to analyse and present each subscale separately to be able to show the various dimensions of mood. The instrument has been used in accordance with pregnancy and childbirth research for example to investigate exercise and psychological well-being during pregnancy (Gaston and Prapavessis, 2013) and to measure parental attitudes in motherhood (Grussu et al, 2005). The POMS is known to have good psychometric properties, with good internal consistency for all subscales and for POMS total (Mcnair, 1971).…”
