Prognostic Importance and Long-Term Determinants of Self-Rated Health After Initial Acute Myocardial Infarction

Abstract: SRH is an important risk marker after MI and its long-term trajectory is accurately predicted by demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, and psychosocial measures. Monitoring of SRH post-MI is therefore warranted.

“…Concerning self-rated health, this hypothesis was confirmed for self-rated health in patients after myocardial infarction (Gerber, Benyamini, Goldbourt, & Drory, 2009) and for pain severity (Barthelsson, Nordstrom, & Norberg, 2011;Cederlund, Ramel, Rosberg, & Dahlin, 2010;HallLord, Larsson, & Steen, 1999;Karlsson, Berglin, Pettersson, & Larsson, 1999). Concerning the severity of other symptoms, Ahola, Saraheimo, Forsblom, Hietala, and Groop (2010) and Richardson, Adner, and Nordstrom (2001) suggest that higher SOC scores are related to lower HbA1c values in diabetic patients, and Bergman, Malm, Karlsson, and Bertero (2009) report less angina attacks in heart patients with higher SOC scores.…”

“…9 A study conducted on the importance of self-rated health in myocardial infarction patients found that low social support, high anxiety, and depression were found to be predictive of poor self-related health, a valid predictor of health and mortality. 10 Another study of seniors age 75 and older showed that less decline in future self-rated health was predicted by a more active physical and social life. 11 Other research has indicated that strong social support is associated with improved quality of life in critically ill patients 12 and is a significant predictor of 1-year mortality after acute myocardial infarction.…”

“…fibrinolysis and percutaneous coronary intervention, have resulted in significant reductions in mortality following acute MI [1]. However, subsequent chronic congestive heart failure plagues an increasing number of MI patients worldwide [2].…”
