Prognostic utility of human complement factor H related protein test (the BTA stat®Test)

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to determine, in addition to well-known prognostic factors, histological grade, stage, tumour size and multiplicity, the correlation of BTA stat Test on disease free interval (DFI) on primary superficial bladder cancer. A total of 116 patients with newly diagnosed bladder cancer were evaluated in a prospective multicentre study. A voided urine sample was obtained prior to TURB and split for culture, cytology and BTA stat testing. Follow-up data for the patients were collected until… Show more

“…BTA-TRAK™ and BTA-STAT™ are dosages of the Bladder tumor antigen (BTA), which is the human complement factor H-related protein (hCFHrp). hCFHrp plays a major role in alternative pathway regulator factor H. This protein has played a role in the carcinogenesis by giving a selective growth advantage and an escape to the host immune system [ 17 , 18 ]. BTA-TRAK is a urine ELISA test and BTA-STAT™ is a quantitative point-of-care test.…”

“…In addition, CFH has been suggested as a marker in lung adenocarcinoma 44 , where shorter survival time of patients with adenocarcinoma was associated with increased CFH staining. Data from the TCGA cohort suggest that increased mRNA levels of CFH are significantly related to poor prognosis in kidney carcinoma 45 and urine levels of a closely related protein CFHR1 were negatively related to bladder cancer survival 46 . To our knowledge, negative relation of CFH protein to survival in metastatic melanoma tissue has not been reported.…”

“…hCFHrp is produced by Bca tumour cells, but it is not detected in healthy bladder tissue and is thought to be involved in allowing the tumour cells to avoid detection by the immune system by downregulating the alternative complement pathway (ACP) [37]. The ACP is constantly active, continually monitoring all cell surfaces it encounters.…”
