Prognostic Value of the Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 Scale in Metastatic Gastric Cancer: A Large-Scale Cohort Study

Abstract: Background: The prognostic value of the nutritional risk screening 2002 (NRS 2002) scale in metastatic gastric cancer remains unclear. We aimed to explore the role of NRS 2002 in metastatic gastric cancer. Methods: In this study, 1664 metastatic gastric cancer patients at our institution between 2000 and 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. The characteristics and clinical outcomes of the included patients were analyzed. Results: Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves showed that the regrouping NRS 2002 s… Show more

“…Nutritional risk screening 2002 (NRS 2002) is an assessment tool which has been widely validated in perioperative settings, it was developed by the Danish Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (DAPEN), and was recommended by European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) [ 17 ]. In present study, the incidence of malnutrition is 53.6 % assessed by NRS2002 which was in line with previous studies [ 24 28 ].…”

“…Sun et al [6] reported that ALB and neutrophils could predict postoperative overall survival (OS) in patients with GC, and Kim et al [7] observed that the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is able to predict the prognosis of GC. Other nutritional assessment tools have been reported for cancer patients, including the Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS), Skeletal Muscle Index (SMI) and Naples Prognostic Score (NPS) [8][9][10][11][12].…”

“…This may suggest that the use of the NRS >5 as a cut-off value should be questioned. Although previous studies have demonstrated that regrouping the NRS may be more effective, we believe that a standardized grouping system is vital for the universal use of the screening tools, rather than the use of different cut-off values (32,33). We also strongly agree that the development of new tools is redundant since dozens of screening tools are already available (10,14).…”
