Abstract: Background Bordetella pertussis is the causative agent of whooping cough or pertussis. Although both acellular (aP) and whole-cell pertussis (wP) vaccines protect against disease, the wP vaccine, which is highly reactogenic, is better at preventing colonization and transmission.
