Progress and application of circulating tumor cells in non-small cell lung cancer

Abstract: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has the highest morbidity and mortality worldwide among malignant tumors. NSCLC is a great threat to health and well-being. Biopsy is the gold standard to diagnose lung cancer, but traditional biopsy methods cannot fully reflect the true condition of tumors. There is growing evidence that a single-point biopsy fails to reveal the complete landscape of the tumor due to intratumor heterogeneity, but it is impractical to complete multiple biopsies that are separated both spatial… Show more

“…Larger CTC clusters result in more metastases than smaller clusters. CTC clusters undergo epidermal-mesenchymal-transition (EMT) through the secretion of TGF-β by platelets who have also aggregated within the cluster [52]. CTC detection in early-stage NSCLC is negatively correlated to overall and disease-free survival, whereas CTC detection in advanced NSCLC is related to worsening prognosis [53].…”

“…It was found that the overall survival and progression free survival of patients with high levels of ctDNA were significantly shorter than those with low levels of ctDNA. ctDNA above baseline indicated a poor prognosis [ 30 ], and it may be more reliable if combined with the dynamic changes of ctDNA [ 31 ].…”

“…The reason for the high mortality rate of NSCLC is that patients were diagnosed at an advanced stage or local late-stage, missing the possibility of early cure. The leading causes include lack of routine physical examination, lack of biomarkers for early diagnosis, and disease surveillance methods ( Qian et al, 2021 ). Therefore, with the progress of imaging, more sensitive and specific tumor biomarkers are needed to screen and diagnose NSCLC.…”
