Progress and Status of a 2G HTS Power Cable to Be Installed in the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Grid

Abstract: Underground high temperature Superconductor (HTS) power cables have attracted extensive interest in recent years due to their potential for high power density. With funding support from the United States Department of Energy (DOE), the world's first transmission voltage level HTS power cable has been designed, fabricated and permanently installed in Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) grid. The HTS cable was successfully commissioned on April 22, 2008. In 2007, a new DOE Superconductor Power Equipment (SPE) pro… Show more

“…This can be attributed to the magnetic field dependency of the critical current density. At high fields, the critical current density significantly reduces, leading to a lower loss than predicted by (1). Fig.…”

“…Nevertheless, several large projects of e.g. power cables [1], [2] and motors [3] have demonstrated the technical feasibility, and a few systems of a high-temperature superconductor based induction heater have been sold on a commercial basis [4]. These devices operate either under DC conditions or at low AC magnetic fields.…”

“…For the ongoing HTS power cable project in Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) grid, Air Liquide designed a Brayton cryocooler with helium as refrigerant for 12 kW at 65 K [5], and they lately started to design a modular refrigeration system based on Brayton cycle for 22 kW at 72 K [6]. For the HTS cable system produced by the Tokyo Electric Power Co. [7], several units of Stirling cryocoolers with 0.8 kW at 67 K were employed for short-length tests.…”
