Progress in art and science of crystal growth and its impacts on modern society

Abstract: The impacts of the progress in the art and science of crystal growth on human life are reviewed. Even before the invention of the transistor, quartz and corundum crystals were used as crystal oscillators and jewel bearings, respectively. However, a major impact of crystal growth on society was experienced with the invention of the transistor, which required high-purity and perfect germanium crystals. Once the importance of crystal growth was clearly recognized, the science of crystal growth also extensively de… Show more

“…Preparing high-quality crystalline samples suitable for analysis can be a difficult task, and yet, it is paramount to a multitude of chemical and biochemical studies. With the emergence of Xray crystallography over the last century, several techniques have been proposed for growing crystals, 1 such as solvent evaporation and vapor diffusion, to name a few. Establishing a range of crystallization techniques is essential for the successful growth of crystals, perhaps even rendering new structures accessible.…”

“…ZnO crystals can be obtained through different methods such as molecular beam epitaxy, radio frequency magnetron sputtering, metal-organic chemical vapor deposition, spray pyrolysis, chemical bath deposition, electrodeposition, pulsed laser deposition, laser molecular beam epitaxy, and the hydrothermal method 19 21 . Different growth techniques such as high-pressure melting technique 22 , solid-state reaction technique 23 and high-temperature hydrothermal technique 24 , 25 have been used to obtain ZnO powder or thin film that can be used as a scintillator.…”
