Progress of synthesizing methods and properties of fluorinated carbon nanotubes

Abstract: In this paper, the recent development of fluorinated carbon nanotubes (F-CNTs) was introduced. The synthesizing methods of F-CNTs, including direct fluorination and plasma treatment, were discussed in detail, and the effects of factors, such as the temperature and pressure in fluorination as well as the kind of fluorine source and carbon nanotubes, on the structures and properties of F-CNTs were also summarized. In the mean time, the special physical and chemical properties of F-CNTs and the relevant applied f… Show more

“…Methods for fluorination mainly consist in the use of fluorine gas mixtures under proper temperature and positive pressure conditions [100] or plasma gas containing fluorine in vacuum [101]. The obtained materials possess a higher solubility in polar solvents (e.g., 1 mg mL −1 in alcohol) and are suitable for further derivatization processes by nucleophilic reactions [102].…”

“…The fluorination of CNTs becomes prevalent for early investigation of the covalent functionalization due to the fact that CNTs sidewalls are expected to be inert (Karousis et al 2010;Li et al 2012). The fluorinated CNTs have C-F bonds that are easily broken than those in alkyl fluorides, and therefore providing substitution sites …”

“…Fluorinated CNTs have a potential in chromatographic separations of various halogenated compounds owing to an optimal combination of hydrophobic properties and specific polar interactions [ 10 ]. The promises of the fluorinated CNTs may be fully realized only when the fluorine atoms would be controllably attached to the nanotube surface and the search of the appropriate ways for that is one of the key points in this scientific field at present [ 11 ].…”
