Progress on Cosmological Magnetic Fields

Tanmay Vachaspati

Abstract: A variety of observations impose upper limits at the nano Gauss level on magnetic fields that are coherent on inter-galactic scales while blazar observations indicate a lower bound ∼ 10 −16 Gauss. Such magnetic fields can play an important astrophysical role, for example at cosmic recombination and during structure formation, and also provide crucial information for particle physics in the early universe. Magnetic fields with significant energy density could have been produced at the electroweak phase transiti… Show more

“…Charged particles like cosmic rays and the charged leptons produced in electromagnetic cascades can be deflected by IGMFs and GMFs. The former comprises fields in clusters (∼ 1 µG), filaments (∼ 1-100 nG), and cosmic voids, whose strength is mostly unknown, ranging from O(10 −6 nG) to O(1 nG) [941,942]. The coherence length of these fields, i.e.…”

“…Radio galaxies can also play a role in the genesis of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters (Kronberg et al 1999;Furlanetto & Loeb 2001;Xu et al 2009), as they can seed primordial magnetic fields (e.g. Vachaspati 2020, for a recent review). Outside of the virial regions of clusters, the impact of galaxies on extragalactic magnetic fields is expected to be detectable with the next generation of deep radio surveys, both in total intensity and Article number, page 1 of 21 arXiv:2102.04193v1 [astro-ph.HE] 8 Feb 2021 polarisation (e.g.…”

“…As we can see from Fig. 1, allowed values for the magnetic fields at the moment of generation are not constrained to microGauss field strength, as it was claimed previously based on BBN bounds without accounting for decaying turbulence [40]. In fact, if previously we were considering the Alfvén speed (or plasma motion characteristic velocity) around 0.2-0.3 (in units of the speed of light), the new limits possibly imply v A (v T ) → 1 [44].…”

“…for a review and references therein. Additionally there are several manifestations of parity symmetry violations in astrophysical objects, including one-sided, oriented radio jets that might be an indication of helical (chiral) magnetic fields presence in the early universe[40].…”
