Progress report on the ATLAS liquid argon presampler

Abstract: The electromagnetic calorimeter of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be of the accordion liquid argon (LAr) type. To a c hieve su cient energy resolution it is necessary to correct for the energy loss upstream of the calorimeter. For this purpose a separate presampler detector, providing a shower sampling in a thin LAr layer (11 mm in depth) before the calorimeter, was developed by the ATLAS collaboration and tested at CERN in September 95.
