Propaganda as Protest Prevention: How Regime Labeling Deters Citizens from Protesting—Without Persuading Them

Abstract: How do authoritarian regimes prevent protests? One strategy, which frequently accompanies the use of repression, is labeling regime opponents negatively in an attempt to discredit them.
