Propagating rift model for the V‐shaped ridges south of Iceland

Abstract: We present new marine geophysical data which constrain the seafloor spreading history of the Reykjanes Ridge near Iceland and the origin of its flanking V‐shaped topographic and gravity ridges. Contrary to the geometry assumed in pulsing plume models, the V‐shaped ridges are not symmetric about the Reykjanes Ridge axis, and seafloor spreading has not been symmetric about a stable axis. Thus, existing models must at least be modified to include an additional asymmetry‐producing mechanism; the best understood an… Show more

“…Is the TR analogous to the "V-shaped ridges" (VSRs) identified (and variously explained) along the Reykjanes and Kolbeinsey ridges (Vogt, 1971;Ito, 2001;Jones et al, 2002;Jones, 2003;Hey et al, 2007), the oldest on Reykjanes Ridge flanks dating back to ca. 37 Ma?…”

“…Active rift propagation has also been proposed on the Reykjanes Ridge south of Iceland (Hey et al 2010), although the acute V-shaped bathymetry and gravity anomalies are more commonly explained with a magma pulse model (Ito 2001;Jones et al 2002;Rudge et al 2008). Brozena & White (1990) identify evidence that multiple ridge jumps and ridge propagation events have reconfigured the arrangement of ridge segments over time in the South Atlantic.…”
