Propensity score matching analysis: incidence and risk factors for “stardust” gastric mucosa, a novel gastric finding potentially induced by vonoprazan

Abstract: SummaryBackgroundVonoprazan, a potassium‐competitive acid blocker, is used for acid‐related diseases. Occasionally, small white protrusions called “stardust” gastric mucosa have been detected in the stomachs of some patients taking vonoprazan.AimsTo determine the incidence of, and risk factors for, stardust gastric mucosa potentially induced by vonoprazanMethodsIn this study, we enrolled 19 503 patients who underwent endoscopy at our hospital between 2016 and 2019. Using propensity score matching, we retrospec… Show more

“…97 However, a case of foveolar-type gastric adenocarcinoma has recently been reported in a male patient with EE after a 156-week maintenance therapy of vonoprazan 10 mg daily. 98 In addition, gastric mucosal redness, ‘stardust gastric mucosa’, and white globe appearance can be observed in patients taking vonoprazan, 99101 but they are not of major clinical significance. Other common AEs were infrequent, and their incidences were similar to that of PPIs.…”

“… 59 , 60 After the release of VPZ, the presence of multiple small white protrusions, located within the fundus and corpus as observed at esophagogastroduodenoscopy was reported in 2020 by Yoshizaki et al. 58 Due to its appearance, this was termed ‘stardust gastric mucosa’ (Figure 1f ). The prevalence rates in VPZ and non‐VPZ users were 4.9% and 0.2%, respectively.…”

“…Miwa et al 35,36 reported a case of WS emerging after the initiation of P-CAB treatment and subsequently disappearing after transitioning to a PPI. The findings by Yoshizaki et al 32 ). This suggests an association between WS and hypergastrinemia, implying that P-CAB-related hypergastrinemia may be involved in the formation of WS.…”

“…30,31 Histologically, WS is characterized by a dilated gland containing either eosinophilic material with necrotic epithelial fragments or a mucus pool. [30][31][32][33] Iwamuro et al 34 reported two cases of WS in P-CAB and PPI users. Miwa et al 35,36 reported a case of WS emerging after the initiation of P-CAB treatment and subsequently disappearing after transitioning to a PPI.…”
