Properties of bitumen modified with latex

Abstract: A lot of effort has been made to improve the base bitumen properties by adding different types of modifier. The current issue of pavement failure has raised a concern that high specification of bitumen is essential to counter the asphalt pavement challenges. This is to ensure that the bitumen could perform better as a road material. Natural rubber, particularly latex, has potential to be used as a modifier in bitumen compared to other types of rubber as it is cheaper, accessible and easily dispersed in the liq… Show more

“…As a result of the stiffening brought about by incorporating NR into asphalt binders, a general improvement against rutting was seen that the binder might keep its rutting potential up to 85°C. Both control and modified asphalt binder (i.e., 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%) can be classified as PG based on performance grades (70, 70, 76, 76, and 82), respectively [68]. In another study, cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) was used with an increase of 0.5%-3%.…”

“…In certain regions, the costs associated with conventional additives (e.g., lime and cement) can be up to three times greater than those of bio-based materials. In addition, the expenses related to conventional stabilizers might be considerably greater due to their bulky nature, especially during long-distance transportation to road sites [68]. Biobased additives, due to their recyclability, are widespread on earth.…”

“…Natural rubber can be utilized as a thermoplastic elastomer form to create modified polymer bitumen. The thermoplastic elastomer known as natural rubber, commonly referred to as latex, helps improve the stiffness and elasticity of asphalt while reducing its sensitivity to temperature fluctuations (Daniel et al, 2019;Poovaneshvaran et al, 2020;Jamaris et al, 2021). Natural rubber is available in liquid and solid forms.…”

“…Latex of ratio (2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10)% has used with bitumen (pen 60/70) and evaluated penetrability, softening point and viscosity; in addition ductility, loss upon heating and dynamic shear rheometer. The addition of latex led to hardened the bitumen, increases the viscosity and provides better resistance against rutting [8].…”
