Properties of differently shaped activated carbon fibers

Abstract: Differently shaped carbon fibers (R-, I-, C-, Y-, and X-type) were prepared from melt-spinning of reformed naphtha cracking bottom oil precursors through various shaped spinnerets. These carbon fibers were activated by steam and activation properties were compared. The decrease of hydraulic radius resulted in the extending of the external surface area of carbon fibers. Activation energy and rate of differently shaped carbon fibers were affected by external surface area. Especially, the activation rate of tetra… Show more

“…Fabrication of relatively less intricate shaped carbon fiber precursor (‘X’ or ‘Y’ shaped) from mesophase pitch was demonstrated earlier6 using single‐component melt‐spinning. In this method shaped orifices consisting of combinations of thin slits were used in the spinneret.…”

“…The other problems in relation with the use of granular activated carbon are entrainment of the powder in the flow stream and abrasion of the granules. One solution way for the mentioned problems is using the activated carbon fiber (ACF) or honeycomb structure activated carbon [13][14][15][16]. ACFs have very wide applications in industries, particularly, for removal of pollutants from water or air.…”

“…The applications of ACF have been widely extended, not only as an adsorbent but also as a catalyst support and as an electronic material [15,[17][18][19]. Different preparation methods for the ACF were proposed in the literature [15,[20][21][22]. Eomet al [15] prepared the ACF through differently shaped spinnerets from pitch precursor.…”
