Properties of membranes from polyelectrolyte complexes consisting of methyl glycol chitosan, [2‐(diethylamino)ethyl]dextran, and poly(potassium vinyl sulfate)

Abstract: Water-insoluble polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) were prepared by mixing methyl glycol chitosan (MGC, 1) and [2-(diethylamino)ethyl]dextran @A, 2) with poly(potassium Vinyl sulfate) (PVSK, 3) in aqueous solution at various hydrogen ion concentrations. Elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, and solubilities of PEC reveal that PEC differ in molecular structure and properties according to pH. It seems that the degree of dissociation and the conformation of MGC, EA, and PVSK change with pH. PEC membranes were made by… Show more

“…Chitosan has been modified by graft copolymerization and by blending with water-soluble polymers [166]. Several studies of chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blended membranes have been reported [167][168][169]. According to Miya et al [163], chitosan forms a clear homogenous blend with PVA, and the tensile strength of the blend is greater than the component value.…”

“…There have been many investigations on the preparation, properties, and applications of MC's consisting of an organic polycation and an organic polyanion, and t h e complexes are expected to be useful as functional and biomedical materials We have previously reported on the preparation, structures, and properties of a series of MC's consisting of organic niacromolecules [3][4][5][6]. So far, however, researches on the polyionic interaction between an organic macromolecule and an inorganic macromolecule have little been known ' 3 *I, and only a few applications of those complexes containing chitosan have been reported','0).…”
