Property Variation of Extruded Mg-Gd Alloys by Mn Addition and Processing

Abstract: This paper presents how the mechanical properties, the microstructure and the degradation rate of extruded Mn-containing Mg-Gd alloys can be modified during extrusion. Gd as a rare earth element is particularly interesting due to the influence on the texture development in Mg, and is therefore studied as a base alloy system. The contents of Gd were investigated between 2 to 9 wt.%, with Mn additions of 0.5 and 1.0 wt.%. The grain sizes and the corresponding textures were modified by varying the extrusion param… Show more

“…Meanwhile, the OM microstructure in three directions of as-extruded Mg-5Li alloy is also displayed in Figure 3b, and is consistent with the SEM results in Figure 2. In general, the strong (0002) basal texture is prone to be formed by the Mg alloy during hot extrusion deformation, and the (0002) plane is parallel to the extrusion direction Materials 2023, 16, 6435 4 of 10 (ED) [21]. In this work, the as-extruded Mg-5Li alloy exhibits a bimodal (0002) basal texture, that is, the (0002) plane is parallel to the extrusion direction ED, and at the same time it tilts about 60 • in the TD direction, which is different from the as-extruded fiber texture of conventional Mg alloys.…”

“…Eight research articles have been published in this Special Issue of Crystals. The different alloy systems, Mg-Ca-Zn [1][2][3], Mg-Zn [4], Mg-Al-Zn-Mn [5,6], Mg-Dy-Nd-Zn-Zr [7], and Mg-Gd-Mn [8], were investigated, and the following production processes were used: extrusion [1,3,5,6,8], ECAP [2], turn-induced deformation (TID) [3], rolling [4,5], and heat treatment [5][6][7].…”

“…The final contribution looks at a less complex Mg-Rare Earth Elements (REE) alloy system Mg-xGd-yMn (x = 2/4/9 wt.%, y = 0.5/1.0 wt.%) and was investigated by Wiese et al [8] during extrusion processing by varying the temperature and the extrusion speed. The results show similar behaviour to the binary Mg-Gd system in terms of processing and material properties such as recrystallization, texture, and grain size.…”
