Propionyl-l-carnitine prevents renal function deterioration due to ischemia/reperfusion

Abstract: These data indicate that propionyl-l-carnitine is of value in preventing decline of renal function that occurs during ischemia-reperfusion. The beneficial effect of propionyl-l-carnitine possibly relates to lowering lipid peroxidation and free radical generation that eventually results in the preservation of tubular cell structure. The efficacy of propionyl-l-carnitine to modulate ischemia-reperfusion injury in these models opens new perspectives for preventing post-transplant delayed graft function.

“…In general, PP of kidneys is considered to function through stabilization of the organ by supplying nutrients and oxygen during storage, by decreasing intrarenal vasospasm and by removal of waste materials while mimicking circulation and increasing vascular compliance. Numerous diagnostic procedures and perfusate modifications have been introduced for PP throughout its evolution (21)(22)(23)(24)(25). Despite the abundance of literature examining these issues and novel technical methodologies, opinions regarding the ultimate efficacy of PP are mixed.…”

“…In many studies serum and/or tissue MDA levels were shown as increased. 19,20,22,[44][45][46][47] In our study, serum creatinine and tissue MDA levels were significantly higher in AIR group than other groups. Also there was a positive correlation between serum creatinine and tissue MDA levels and between creatinine values and TSHD.…”

“…Mister et al showed in their studies with the same method that carnitine protected phospholipids and cellular membrane integrity by preventing lipid peroxidation and release of free oxygen radicals. Mister et al 20 also showed that carnitine prevented increase in MDA levels in kidneys after reperfusion. Besides, carnitine also prevents increase in MDA levels in IR damage in several organs and in renal damage caused by several agents.…”
