Proposal for an Extended Run of T2K to $20\times10^{21}$ POT

Abstract: Recent measurements by the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment indicate that CP violation in neutrino mixing may be observed in the future by long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We propose an extension to the currently approved T2K running from 7.8 × 10 21 protons-on-target to 20 × 10 21 protons-on-target, aiming at initial observation of CP violation with 3 σ or higher significance for the case of maximum CP violation.

“…The cross-section model is also being refined, notably by the addition of parameters controlling the uncertainties on short and long range correlations. The T2K analyses are taking place in the prospect of the T2K-II phase, that plans to increase the total acquired POT to 20 • 10 21 in order to achieve a 3σ exclusion of δ CP [5].…”

“…Here we will investigate how this might increase with future data (see also [61,62]). The T2K experiment will keep on collecting data until 2026 and will obtain more than 10 times data (20 × 10 21 POT) [63], before the next generation of accelerator neutrino experiments (e.g. DUNE [44], T2HK [45] or T2HKK [64]) takes over.…”

“…For the future data of T2K collected until 2026, we take the estimated numbers from Ref. [63] for the normal mass ordering, including 558.7 ν e events and 115.8 ν e events, with a background of 110.1 (ν e )+63.5 (ν e ) events. These numbers are assuming maximal CP violation (δ CP = −π/2) and equal exposure in the neutrino and antineutrino modes, i.e.…”

“…In the next decade several experiments will attempt to measure the neutrino mass hierarchy [1,2,3,4,5,6]: some experiments are already taking data [7,8], and preliminary results seems to point towards the normal hierarchy [9], however we are far from a clear determination. In reactor neutrino experiments, like JUNO [6], the mass hierarchy is determined by studying the interference between the 1-3 and 2-3 oscillations at intermediate baselines.…”
