Considering a large number of Small and Medium-Scale Contractors (SMSCs) dominating the construction industries of many developing nations and the increasingly high rate of tower crane accidents in the industry, this paper seeks to methodically determine the safety risk factors that are significant in influencing construction site safety, especially on sites where the SMSCs operate tower cranes. The paper will further assess the extent to which each safety risk factor affects safety on construction sites. Data for the study was obtained through a literature search, site visual observations, discussions with site operators, and structured questioning of safety and equipment managers of leading construction companies. The study's findings reveal that the operator's low experience level was the most significant factor influencing construction site safety, particularly when operating tower cranes. This paper systematically investigates the key safety risk factors that influence construction site safety when operating tower cranes. The paper presents a clear methodology for identifying and prioritizing the safety risk factors, which may readily apply to other construction equipment. The findings of this paper are expected to play an important role in promoting and enhancing a safety culture for operating tower cranes in construction sites, particularly the project sites operated by the SMSCs.

The quality of preparations carried out before building work commences has a significant impact on the smooth running and overall financial costs of a construction project. The use of construction machinery, which is crucial with regard to the efficiency of the construction process, plays an important role. In building construction, the machines in question are mainly tower cranes. The paper presents a new method for assessing the utilisation of tower cranes over time during the construction of reinforced concrete monolithic structures. The method, which contributes to the efficient utilisation of such cranes, is based on a mathematical simulation model that predicts the work cycles of a tower crane during a work shift when work is being performed on individual construction sub-processes. Construction sub-processes are analysed in detail with regard to the service provided to them by a tower crane. Data can also be obtained from binding construction schedules and boundary conditions, which in every case are for a specific executed construction project. The simulation model of the work of tower cranes has been developed for use in software applications. The created application expands the possibilities of smart construction site design in a digital environment and can also be used directly from an internet browser.

PurposeThe crane plays an essential role in modern construction sites as it supports numerous operations and activities on-site. Additionally, the crane produces a big amount of data that, if analyzed, could significantly affect productivity, progress monitoring and decision-making in construction projects. This paper aims to show the usability of crane data in tracking the progress of activities on-site.Design/methodology/approachThis paper presents a pattern-based recognition method to detect concrete pouring activities on any concrete-based construction sites. A case study is presented to assess the methodology with a real-life example.FindingsThe analysis of the data helped build a theoretical pattern for concrete pouring activities and detect the different phases and progress of these activities. Accordingly, the data become useable to track progress and identify problems in concrete pouring activities.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper presents an example for construction practitioners and researcher about a practical and easy way to analyze the big data that comes from cranes and how it is used in tracking projects' progress. The current study focuses only on concrete pouring activities; future studies can include other types of activities and can utilize the data with other building methods to improve construction productivity.Practical implicationsThe proposed approach is supposed to be simultaneously efficient in terms of concrete pouring detection as well as cost-effective. Construction practitioners could track concrete activities using an already-embedded monitoring device.Originality/valueWhile several studies in the literature targeted the optimization of crane operations and of mitigating hazards through automation and sensing, the opportunity of using cranes as progress trackers is yet to be fully exploited.
