Abstract: Study design Prospective population-based epidemiological study on traumatic spinal cord injury in Ireland Objectives To provide updated data for the global TSCI repository Setting Republic of Ireland Methods All cases of TSCI acquired during 2016 were included. ISCoS core dataset was collected on all cases. Descriptive statistics are reported. Results Overall crude incidence of TSCI was 12.8 per million (61 cases). Males accounted for 75.4%. “…In European studies, age at TSCI onset varied between 42 years in Russia [ 27 ] and 59 years in Finland [ 28 ]. This is quite different than our results, which are closer to those reported in Ireland, Switzerland, and Norway (range: 47 to 52 years) [ 22 24 ]. No significant differences were identified between our observed age at NTSCI onset and those reported in Norway, Ireland, and Finland (range: 55 to 62 years) [ 25 , 26 , 29 ].…”

“…Although slightly lower, our findings are comparable to those from the Western Europe WHO Region for both TSCI (16 cases per million) [ 11 ] and NTSCI [ 3 ]. Similarly, our observed male-to-female ratio reflected previously identified proportions for both TSCI [ 22 , 24 ] and NTSCI [ 25 , 26 ]. In European studies, age at TSCI onset varied between 42 years in Russia [ 27 ] and 59 years in Finland [ 28 ].…”

“…The majority of participants were male (n = 14), in keeping with the higher incidences of SCI in the men (Smith et al, 2019;Smith et al, 2018). Study participants varied most notably in terms of ASIA classification and time since injury.…”
