Prospective, Randomized Comparison of Same-Day Dose of 2 Different Bowel Cleanser for Afternoon Colonoscopy

Abstract: For afternoon colonoscopy, same-day administration of sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, and citric acid (PM/Ca) is recommended. However, few studies have evaluated the bowel-cleansing efficacy and safety of this regimen. The aim of this study was to compare the bowel-cleansing efficacy, side effects, and patient's tolerability of a same-day split administration of PM/Ca with polyethylene glycol (PEG) for afternoon colonoscopy.Patients were randomly assigned to a PM/Ca group or a PEG group. The PM/Ca group c… Show more

“…On the other hand, sodium picosulfate solution, a combination of magnesium oxide and citric acid, manufactured by Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Parsippany, NJ, has been demonstrated to have fewer adverse effects. It is an effective, low volume bowel cleansing product with excellent effectiveness, adequate tolerance, and less electrolyte imbalance compared to PEG [ 10 , 14 ].…”

“…However, several previous studies reported no aspiration when bowel preparation was finished 2 hours before colonoscopy. [ 18 , 22 ] To investigate aspiration risk, we measured the volume of fluid in the stomach, which was <30 mL and did not differ between the 2 groups. The American Society of Anesthesiologists recommends at least 2 hours of fasting from the intake of clear liquids to before sedation.…”

“…Although willingness to reuse the cleansing regimen was lower than reported in previous studies, [ 15 , 22 ] in this study we used 4L PEG, which was related to patient inconvenience because of the large volume. [ 18 ] Future studies should compare the safety and tolerability of same-day dosing with PEG with those of split-dose regimen.…”
